In response to the frequent grid collapses affecting the country, Nigeria’s Minister for Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has directed the immediate implementation of the recommendations from the inter-agency committee tasked with addressing the ongoing power sector challenges. This decision follows the latest disturbance in the national grid, which occurred on November 7, 2024, at 11:29 am, when the grid experienced a spike in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz.

Chief Adelabu has called for swift action from all relevant agencies, emphasizing the need to implement the committee’s recommendations, which were submitted just the day before, on November 6, 2024. These recommendations are designed to offer lasting solutions to the grid failures that have disrupted power supply across the country. The Minister’s spokesman, Hon. Bolaji Tunji, stated that the proposed measures will provide both short-term relief and long-term improvements in Nigeria’s electricity transmission system.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has acknowledged the challenges that the power sector currently faces. They have asked for the public’s understanding as repairs on the national grid are underway. TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that efforts to restore full power are ongoing, with the Abuja Axis successfully restored just minutes after the disruption. The power company is working diligently to ensure that the grid’s stability is restored as quickly as possible.

TCN also clarified that the recent disturbance was triggered by issues at one of its substations, which required temporary shutdown to prevent further complications. While recovery efforts continue, the agency has reassured the public that it is committed to minimizing the impact of these repairs and to achieving a stable power supply moving forward.
