member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Akinlayo Kolawole, has urged state governors who have not yet implemented the newly approved minimum wage to take immediate action to improve the lives of their citizens. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that workers receive fair compensation, especially amid the rising cost of living in the country.

Kolawole, who represents Ekiti North Federal Constituency II, commended Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for signing the new N70,000 minimum wage into law, describing it as a significant step in supporting workers’ welfare. The lawmaker praised the move as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of workers in the state.

In a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Friday, Kolawole stressed that the new minimum wage is not only a legal requirement but a necessity given the current economic challenges facing the country. He pointed out the rising prices of food, transportation, and other essential services as evidence that the previous N30,000 minimum wage was no longer sufficient.

“Implementing the new minimum wage is essential to improving the standard of living for Nigerian workers,” Kolawole stated. “Reasonable salaries and allowances are crucial to motivate workers and ensure they can continue to serve the nation effectively. This is especially important as civil service remains the backbone of the government structure.”

Kolawole also highlighted that fair wages contribute to the equitable distribution of resources, which can help reduce corruption and strengthen the economy. He encouraged other governors who have not yet adopted the new wage policy to follow Ekiti’s example, ensuring that workers across the country benefit from the improved salary structure.

While lauding Ekiti workers for their support of the state government’s initiatives, Kolawole called on them to continue backing the Oyebanji administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure and public services. He urged citizens to reciprocate the sacrifices made by the governor in transforming the state.

Additionally, Kolawole appealed to all Nigerian governors, regardless of political party, to join forces with President Bola Tinubu in creating impactful policies that improve the quality of life for all citizens. “The President cannot do it alone,” he said. “We must all work together to make the country better for everyone.”
