The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved a N70,000 minimum wage for all employees under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), with immediate effect. This landmark decision was confirmed through a statement issued by Anthony Odeh, Press Secretary to the Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, on Tuesday.

The approval aligns with the Minimum Wage Bill signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in May 2024, which established N70,000 as the new baseline for workers across the country after extensive discussions with labor unions.

Labor unions, including the FCT chapters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), had previously voiced dissatisfaction with delays in implementing the new wage policy. Threatening a nationwide strike set for November 30, 2024, the unions criticized the Wike-led administration for its lack of engagement since his appointment in August 2023.

Announced on Monday, November 18, 2024, the wage adjustment also includes the payment of three months’ arrears, set to commence this month. Acting Head of Civil Service of the FCT, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, highlighted that this move aims to enhance worker morale and ensure continued support for the administration’s efforts to advance President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This initiative will motivate all administration staff to continue supporting the minister in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Adayilo stated.

The statement underscored Wike’s dedication to the welfare and well-being of FCTA employees, framing the wage increase as a testament to his commitment to worker satisfaction and productivity.
