The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced the unveiling of the voters’ register for the upcoming local government elections, set for October 5, 2024.

At a recent event held in the Rumudara community within the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, RSIEC Chairman Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli led the team in showcasing the register. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that the elections are conducted in a fair, credible, and violence-free manner.

Enebeli emphasized the importance of the voters’ register display, which allows citizens to confirm their registration status and identify their polling units ahead of the elections. He encouraged the people of Rivers State to actively participate on October 5 by casting their votes for their preferred candidates.

Reassuring the public of RSIEC’s impartiality, Enebeli highlighted the Commission’s dedication to creating an equitable environment for all political parties and candidates involved.

Responding to inquiries from journalists regarding the acquisition of the voters’ register amidst a court order that restricts the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing certain documents, Enebeli clarified that RSIEC is committed to following the law. He revealed that the Commission had taken proactive measures to obtain the necessary documentation last year, prior to the enforcement of the court orders.

“A wise man can never be taken unawares. We are proactive and will follow due process. Even before the cases went to court, we had already engaged with INEC, and the correspondence is documented,” he stated. Enebeli underscored the importance of foresight and preparation, asserting, “I’m not a last-minute person; I plan ahead. All these arrangements were finalized last year.”
