The Nigerian Senate has officially begun the debate on the series of Tax Reform Bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024. This significant legislative move follows a closed-door session held earlier in the day, which lasted for approximately an hour.

Upon reconvening, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) took the lead in presenting the bills for discussion. The four key bills under consideration are crucial to reshaping the nation’s tax system. Among them is the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, designed to establish a comprehensive fiscal framework for taxation in Nigeria. Additionally, the Tax Administration Bill aims to provide a clear legal structure for tax management and resolve conflicts that may arise.

Another major bill is the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, which seeks to replace the existing Federal Inland Revenue Service Act with the establishment of a new national revenue body. The fourth bill, the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, proposes the creation of a tax tribunal and an ombudsman to handle disputes.

In a notable development, members of President Tinubu’s economic team, including Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, and Zacchaeus Adedeji, Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, joined the plenary session. They provided detailed explanations of the bills to the lawmakers, marking a significant step toward public discussion and scrutiny of the proposed tax changes.
