Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has issued a bold challenge to politicians, declaring that those unwilling to fight for the people who elected them should step aside. His remarks come in the wake of the dramatic Rivers State Local Government Area elections, which took place despite significant opposition.

During an interview with Soar TV on Saturday, Okonkwo commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his unwavering commitment to ensuring the elections went ahead, despite the absence of the Nigeria Police Force and pushback from supporters of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

“Any politician who is not ready to stand up for the people who voted for them, out of fear for their own safety, should step down,” Okonkwo said, praising Fubara’s courage. He added that Nigeria needs leaders like Fubara, who resist when their rights are threatened, in order to strengthen the country’s democratic process.

The actor-turned-lawyer emphasized that politicians unwilling to take the risks inherent in their positions should leave room for those who are prepared to defend the people’s rights. He stated, “If you can’t stand for the people and because you’re afraid to die, then step aside. That’s part of the responsibility that comes with the job.”

Okonkwo praised Fubara for his determination to proceed with the elections despite immense challenges. “Sim Fubara showed real leadership by insisting the elections must take place. Winners must be declared, and they will be sworn in. Whatever happens afterward, let it happen.”

He called for more leaders willing to fight for their rights and the rights of the people, stating, “I want leaders who will say, ‘No one will rig my election. If you try, I will fight.'”
