United States President-elect Donald Trump has appointed tech magnate Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a newly formed department aimed at boosting government efficiency. This unit, officially named the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is positioned to play a key role in Trump’s administration, with a mission to overhaul federal structures, eliminate unnecessary regulations, and reduce government spending.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, was shared via Musk’s account on X, formerly known as Twitter, early Wednesday. President Trump expressed that Musk and Ramaswamy’s leadership is critical to achieving his administration’s “Save America” goals, specifically through reducing bureaucracy and implementing entrepreneurial practices within federal agencies.

“I am pleased to announce that the great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency (‘DOGE’),” Trump stated in his release. “Together, these two wonderful Americans will dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excessive regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies,” he continued, emphasizing the need to curb waste in the federal budget. According to the statement, the DOGE will also collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement extensive structural reforms that bring a private sector approach to public governance.

Referring to the initiative as the potential “Manhattan Project of our time,” Trump highlighted the transformative ambition behind the DOGE, describing it as a long-held Republican objective. “Republican politicians have dreamed about the objectives of ‘DOGE’ for a very long time,” he remarked. “Elon and Vivek will aim to make government more efficient while making life better for all Americans.”

With a deadline of July 4, 2026, Musk and Ramaswamy are tasked with completing their work by the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Trump sees this reform as a historic gift, offering a “smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy.” He noted, “I am confident they will succeed.”

Musk, known for leading high-profile companies such as X, Tesla, and Starlink, has been an open supporter of Trump’s policies and contributed $75 million to pro-Trump groups during the campaign, according to Reuters. Ramaswamy, a prominent conservative entrepreneur, joins Musk as they push forward with what could be a transformative chapter in U.S. governance.
