Protests have flared up across eight Nsulu communities in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Abia State, over the proposed surveying of communal lands for a new state airport project. The initiative, spearheaded by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, faced significant pushback as local landowners blocked the perimeter survey, citing concerns about their exclusion from the planning process.

Community leaders, including Mr. Ukaumunna Echezolam, the Village Head of Umuezenta, criticized the project, emphasizing the potential loss of ancestral lands and threats to their farming-dependent livelihoods. Echezolam expressed frustration over unfulfilled promises linked to past developments like the Nsulu Games Village and Ntigha Inland Dry Port. “We’ve already sacrificed too much,” he stated. “Previous commitments remain unfulfilled, and now they’re asking for more land without proper engagement.”

Residents further decried the lack of transparent communication and the intimidating presence of security forces during the surveying attempt, fueling fears of forced land acquisition.

However, the state government defended its actions, with Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, asserting that consultations with community representatives had been conducted and pledging that fair compensation would be provided under the Land Use Act.

Despite these reassurances, many locals remain skeptical, voicing a preference for smaller, community-driven projects that could deliver tangible benefits without disrupting their way of life. The clash underscores the ongoing tension between development initiatives and the preservation of traditional lands and livelihoods in the region.
