Ruben Amorim, the incoming manager of Manchester United, has urged fans to manage their expectations despite his Sporting CP side delivering an emphatic 4-1 win against Manchester City in his final game at Estadio Jose Alvalade. Speaking after the match, Amorim downplayed the impressive scoreline, calling it “misleading” and stressing that luck played a key role in the result.

Amorim, who will officially take over at Old Trafford during the upcoming international break, was quick to caution United supporters against reading too much into Sporting’s unexpected triumph over their city rivals. “It was written that it had to be like this. This result is misleading. We were very lucky in this game. But the feeling with my players, the way they celebrated the win with the fans, was very special,” he explained.

Viktor Gyokeres was the standout player, scoring a hat-trick, including two penalties, while Maxi Araujo also found the net for Sporting. City had initially taken the lead through Phil Foden, and Erling Haaland could have changed the course of the game had he not struck the bar with a penalty.

Despite the significant victory, Amorim warned that his success in Portugal would not necessarily translate to the same results in the Premier League. “When I arrive there, it will be a different world, with different pressure. I will try to be the same. It will be fun — very fun — and I am ready for the challenge,” he said, referring to the demanding environment he will soon face at United.

He also addressed concerns over unrealistic expectations, particularly those comparing him to Sir Alex Ferguson. “You cannot transport one reality into another. At Manchester United, you cannot play exactly like this. You cannot play so defensively, and so we will have to adapt,” he explained.

Acknowledging United’s recent struggles, Amorim also emphasized the challenges ahead, with the club having won only two of their last ten matches. “Clearly it is really difficult to beat this team and to beat Pep Guardiola. And he is not a worse manager than me. It will be a completely different world, a different team, we won’t have that much time to train, and we will begin from a different starting point,” he added.

Amorim closed his remarks with a final message to Manchester United supporters: “People can make their own judgments, but I say to the people of Manchester that this was a one-off.”
