Northern Nigeria at a Crossroads

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on key northern leaders to urgently confront the deepening crises in education and agriculture, warning that ignoring these issues could push the region further behind the rest of the country.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna, Atiku stressed that rebuilding human capital must be a top priority if the North hopes to remain influential and competitive.

“Act Now or Fall Behind,” Atiku Warns

Atiku cautioned that the region could “fall irretrievably behind” without collective action. He noted that boosting educational standards, strengthening agricultural productivity and tackling insecurity are essential steps toward reversing the region’s steady decline.

He urged northern elders to close ranks and support policies that encourage unity, stability and long-term development.

Honoring Leaders of the Past

The former vice president also paid tribute to past leaders of the ACF, praying for their peace and acknowledging their contributions. He noted that anniversaries like this offer not just a moment of celebration, but a chance to reflect on an organisation’s vision and effectiveness.

Addressing Division and Strengthening Unity

Atiku highlighted the need to properly manage diversity within the North, warning that external actors often manipulate fears and spread misinformation to create division. He emphasised that leaders must uphold fairness, equity and security for every group in the region.

According to him, those who deliberately stoke division for personal gain endanger the North‘s stability and long-term future.

A Region Facing Rising Pressures

Atiku urged northern leaders to urgently address issues surrounding population growth, education gaps, food security and employment. With population numbers rising, he said, the North must act decisively to prepare for the future.
