In a stark message on Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned of the nation’s drift toward a one-party dictatorship. Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed deep concerns about Nigeria’s political future, emphasizing the need for all politicians to take urgent action to protect the country’s democratic values.

Posting on his verified X handle, Atiku said, “It is deeply regrettable that our current landscape reflects a troubling decline in electoral credibility, increasingly manipulated by those in power.” He noted that opposition parties are struggling under a political system where the ruling party exploits internal processes, pushing the nation closer to authoritarian rule.

Atiku called on politicians and statesmen of integrity to unite in defense of democracy, urging for collective action before it’s too late. Despite these challenges, Atiku took a moment to celebrate Nigeria’s achievements, offering heartfelt congratulations to Nigerians for their resilience.
