Former President Goodluck Jonathan has sounded the alarm over the health of Nigeria’s democracy, cautioning that the political landscape is increasingly being tainted by reckless behavior. Speaking at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, he said the nation’s democratic system is being “suffocated” by actions that undermine civility and national stability.

Jonathan emphasized that politics should never become a playground for irresponsibility. He stressed that a thriving democracy relies on leaders who are accountable, disciplined, and committed to progress. According to him, governance fueled by hostility rather than restraint prevents meaningful development.

The event also celebrated Jonathan’s 68th birthday and attracted prominent African leaders, diplomats, and policymakers. Using the platform, he reminded political actors that “Politics is not for rascals,” urging them to focus on nation-building rather than divisive agendas. He warned that inflammatory rhetoric and provocative behavior are gradually eroding democratic institutions across Africa.

Reflecting on the work of his foundation, Jonathan highlighted its focus on peacebuilding, conflict resolution, diplomatic engagement, and the strengthening of democratic processes across the continent. He voiced concern over the rising incidents of attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes, calling on authorities to prioritize the safety and security of citizens.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, paid tribute to Jonathan’s leadership. He lauded Jonathan’s historic decision in 2015 to concede defeat, calling it a defining act of statesmanship that reinforced Nigeria’s democratic journey. Shettima noted that democracy endures when leaders place national unity above personal ambition, adding that Jonathan’s continued advocacy for peace exemplifies public service beyond political office.

Also speaking at the event, PDP National Chairman and former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki, commended the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation for its decade-long impact. He described it as a leading voice in mediation, conflict resolution, and democratic reforms in Africa, emphasizing its role in promoting stability and supporting governance initiatives across the region.
