In honor of the 91st posthumous birthday of the iconic Igbo leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa has reaffirmed his unwavering belief that nothing can thwart the realization of Biafra independence. The Finland-based leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) made this declaration in response to an international media report emphasizing the growing momentum of Biafra’s march towards independence.

Ojukwu, born on November 4, 1933, served as the President of the Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. Before this, he held the position of military governor of Nigeria’s Eastern Region, which he declared as the independent state of Biafra. His legacy is marked by his resistance against the Nigerian invasion of Biafra, a conflict that led to a significant humanitarian crisis. After his death in 2011 at age 78 in London, his remains were returned to Nigeria, where he received a state funeral attended by thousands, complete with military honors.

In his recent statement, Ekpa highlighted the increasing international recognition of the Biafra agitation, viewing it as a reflection of the sacrifices made by the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile and the commitment of Biafrans worldwide. He pointed to the upcoming Biafra Convention scheduled for November 29 to December 2, 2024, as a pivotal moment that will strengthen the Declaration of Biafra Independence.

Ekpa expressed his fulfillment over the progress of the Biafra cause, stating, “Our Biafra aspiration is coming to life with international recognition everywhere.” He emphasized the significance of the convention, insisting that Biafra’s emergence as a sovereign entity is inevitable. “No forces on earth can prevent Biafra from happening,” he asserted, underscoring the resolve of the Biafran people.
