The ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has sparked serious accusations from an inter-religious coalition known as the Concerned Igbo Ministers Commission. They claim that Kanu’s continued imprisonment is part of a sinister plot against the Igbo people.

In a statement released by President and Coordinator Rev. Tony Uzo Anthony and General Secretary Apostle Tony Osuji, the group has pointed fingers at South-East governors, alleging they are conspiring to keep Kanu incarcerated for political reasons. They are calling on traditional rulers, religious leaders, advocacy groups, and the global community to unite and denounce this perceived injustice.

The statement highlighted the troubling developments in Kanu’s case, particularly noting that the presiding judge has ignored a Supreme Court ruling regarding his release. “Kanu remains illegally held in Nigeria, while many others guilty of serious offenses have been set free,” the ministers pointed out.

They also expressed their dismay over the judge’s previous acknowledgment that the charges against Kanu were politically motivated. “Why, knowing this, would she continue to subject him to such treatment?” they questioned.

The group now believes the South-East governors are intent on keeping Kanu detained indefinitely for political leverage, potentially planning to release him in a calculated move to bolster President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s standing in the South-East and South-South regions.

“Our governors and the President should not underestimate our awareness of their activities and schemes,” the statement asserted. The clerics urged Igbo people worldwide to engage with leaders in Kenya, Britain, and the South-East to advocate for Kanu’s release, arguing that he has committed no wrongdoing.

The ministers accused the South-East governors of perpetuating instability for personal gain, citing their benefits from security funds. “If peace is truly desired, why not engage with Kanu and seek solutions to end the unrest in the region?” they asked.

In a rallying cry, they called upon Nigerians, including traditional leaders and religious figures, to reject what they term an evil conspiracy against the Igbo people. “The future of our son Kanu rests on your shoulders,” they warned, holding these leaders accountable for his fate.
