Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has directed a restriction on vehicular movement across roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the governorship election in Edo State on Saturday. This measure is part of comprehensive security protocols aimed at ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible election process.

The IGP emphasized that exceptions will be made for essential services, including accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders. The move is intended to maintain order and prevent disruptions during the voting process.

Ban on Security Escorts and Unauthorized Personnel

In addition to the movement restrictions, the IGP has banned security aides and escorts from accompanying VIPs to polling stations and collation centers. Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security outfits are prohibited from operating during the election, while the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles is strictly forbidden.

The IGP reiterated that special consideration will be given to individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring polling stations are accessible to all voters across both urban and rural areas.

Security Protocols and Public Appeal

Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Frank Emeka Mba, who is overseeing the Edo Gubernatorial Election, has urged citizens to avoid making prank calls to control room numbers and to use text messages for operational purposes. The election help lines have been set up for inquiries and reports, and the joint control room is fully operational with police and relevant agencies.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities that may disrupt the electoral process or cause unrest. The IGP stressed that any violation of electoral laws or attempts to interfere with the election will face legal consequences.
