Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has laid out the conditions that would make him consider taking on the role permanently. Tasked with leading the team through the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya, Eguavoen hinted that securing the position full-time would require more than just a short-term commitment.

Reflecting on his previous stints as head coach, Eguavoen emphasized that a long-term contract, patience, and consistent support from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) are essential. Speaking to Brila FM, he explained, “The Super Eagles job isn’t one you take lightly. To accept it permanently, I’d need time to sit down, reflect, and think deeply, as it’s not a small task. Building a winning team requires time and patience.”

Eguavoen, who has previously served as head coach three times, voiced his frustration at not being given enough time to implement his vision. “In 2006, I was in charge for only six months. Other times, it was just for two months or two to three games. Clemens Westerhof had five years, Gernot Rohr had six years. They had time, but I never had two straight years.”

For Eguavoen, the path to long-term success with the Super Eagles requires contractual assurances and trust from the NFF. He made it clear that building a competitive and consistent team won’t happen overnight, and without these guarantees, the role would be difficult to manage.
