Former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, has officially launched the Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa Foundation with an initial capital of ₦1 billion aimed at improving the welfare of the people of Sokoto. During the launch event held at his residence on Wednesday, Bafarawa expressed his gratitude to the people of Sokoto for giving him the opportunity to serve as governor for two terms and reflected on his time in office.

Bafarawa spoke about the “mixed feelings” he experiences when he reflects on his tenure, acknowledging that there may have been instances of misappropriation of funds through acts of “omission or commission.” He openly asked for forgiveness from the people of Sokoto in areas where he may have fallen short of their expectations.

In his speech, Bafarawa said, “A little over 25 years ago, the majority of the voting population in Sokoto entrusted me with their mandate. After four years, they renewed it for a second term, for which I am immensely grateful.”

He emphasized his commitment to prudent management of state resources during his time as governor, highlighting the ₦13 billion surplus he left behind when his term ended in 2007. However, Bafarawa admitted that, like any human being, he may have made decisions that did not always serve the public interest, leading to “pricks of conscience” and a sense of responsibility for restitution.

The foundation, which Bafarawa described as part of his “giving back philosophy,” aims to provide assistance to vulnerable communities in the state, focusing on basic needs such as food, shelter, water, and clothing. The funds will be managed by a committee led by Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, known for his experience and honesty in handling charitable distributions. Maidoki will be assisted by a diverse group of trusted individuals to ensure the transparent and fair allocation of resources across all 23 local government areas in Sokoto State.

At 70 years old, Bafarawa expressed his desire to “reconnect” with the people and fill any gaps created during his time in office, viewing this foundation as a step towards achieving that goal.
