Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has addressed reports surrounding his daughter, Mrs. Helen Obareki, taking charge of the Office of the First Lady. Contrary to recent media claims, Governor Eno emphasized that his daughter has not been appointed as the state’s First Lady but will coordinate the office in light of her previous role as the Special Assistant to her late mother, Mrs. Patience Umo Eno.

Mrs. Patience Umo Eno passed away on September 26, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. During a condolence visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, the governor explained that his daughter’s involvement was a natural step, given her experience and closeness to her late mother. He stated that her coordination of the office would bring healing to the family while ensuring the smooth continuation of vital programs.

Speaking at All Nations Christian Ministry Intl in Eket, Governor Eno described the decision as more personal than political. He stressed that appointing his daughter to coordinate the office was intended to maintain continuity, particularly with his wife’s key initiatives, such as the “Golden Initiative For All,” which supports women, the elderly, and the less privileged. According to Eno, Helen’s background, education, and deep familiarity with the office’s responsibilities make her the ideal person to oversee these programs.

“First Ladies are not appointed,” the governor reiterated. “It’s only fitting that someone who worked closely with my wife, someone who understands the vision, continues her work. This is not political; it’s a necessary and natural step to keep her legacy alive.”

Governor Eno expressed his appreciation to Mrs. Tinubu for her visit and for acknowledging his decision. He also thanked the church community for their support during this difficult time, asking them to find comfort in faith.

By placing his daughter in this role, Eno believes the Office of the First Lady will continue to function effectively, ensuring that none of the programs initiated by his late wife will fade away.
