Ahead of the Ondo State governorship election scheduled for November 16, 2024, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has barred the Amotekun security network and other local vigilante groups from election-related activities. In a bid to maintain a neutral and controlled security presence, only federal security agencies and members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security will be responsible for overseeing the election environment.

To strengthen security efforts, specialized units from the police force, including the Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, and K-9 Unit, have been assigned to strategic locations across the state. In addition to these units, the police will conduct aerial and waterway patrols to ensure swift responses to any security concerns, particularly in areas prone to unrest or electoral disruption.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also announced the deployment of over 15,500 ad hoc staff members, tasked with supporting smooth election processes across Ondo State’s 3,933 polling units. This substantial workforce aims to help manage the voting process effectively, ensuring that polling stations operate with efficiency and fairness.

Further bolstering election security, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has mobilized 6,000 officers to assist in safeguarding the electoral process. Authorities have issued strict warnings against any form of political violence or disruptions, emphasizing that robust security measures are in place to protect voters, polling officials, and all those involved in election day activities.

With this multi-layered security approach, the Inspector General of Police and related agencies underscore their commitment to a peaceful and orderly election, providing confidence for Ondo State residents as they prepare to cast their votes.
