Devastating tanker explosion in Majiya town, Jigawa State, has claimed 209 lives and left 99 others injured, according to the Jigawa Tanker Explosion Investigation Panel. The incident, which occurred on October 14, 2024, caused widespread destruction, leaving 167 families displaced and damaging properties worth millions of naira.

Hafizu Inuwa, chairman of the investigation panel, presented the findings to Governor Umar Namadi on Wednesday in Dutse. The 25-member panel was established to uncover the causes of the disaster and recommend preventive measures.

The investigation revealed poor road conditions, including potholes and damaged speed-breakers near the accident site, as key factors contributing to the tragedy. Additional causes included night driving and excessive speeding. The explosion itself was triggered when friction from metallic containers, used by locals attempting to collect spilled fuel, ignited the flammable liquid.

In his report, Inuwa disclosed that 38 injured victims remain hospitalized, while 61 have been discharged. The panel emphasized the significant human and material losses, urging immediate action to prevent future occurrences.

Governor Namadi commended the panel for its thorough investigation and pledged to implement its recommendations. “We will take decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents. Preventing such tragedies is our top priority,” he affirmed.
