Low Voter Turnout in Anambra LGA Elections as Drivers Flout Movement Restrictions

On Saturday, Anambra’s 2024 Local Government Elections organized by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) saw a notable lack of participation from residents in Onitsha, the state’s commercial center. While many individuals were seen in their neighborhoods, only a small number made their way to polling stations.
This election marks the first local government voting event in Anambra in over a decade. Despite state-imposed movement restrictions, commercial drivers continued their usual activities, largely disregarding the limitations.

Interviews with local residents revealed a deep skepticism regarding the integrity of electoral officials, with many recalling past disappointments. Mrs. Chinyere Olisa expressed her discontent over not finding her name on the accredited voters’ list during the 2023 presidential election, despite traveling home specifically to cast her vote. “I wasted my time and money during that election; I won’t do it again,” she remarked.
Food vendor Mrs. Gloria Effiong highlighted the lack of campaigning in the lead-up to the election. “Many people weren’t even aware that the election was happening today. There was no door-to-door campaigning like in previous elections,” she explained.
Chidi Samuel, a tricyclist working the busy Old Road to Nkpor junction, mentioned he started his business at 6:30 a.m. and had no intention of voting. His disillusionment was clear as he stated that people’s votes seem irrelevant, with outcomes appearing predetermined by the electoral officials.
