Sokoto State is facing heightened security concerns with the emergence of a new terrorist group, LAKURAWAS. Deputy Governor Idris Gobir brought this alarming development to light during a visit from members of Course 33 at the National Defence College, Abuja. He characterized LAKURAWAS as a faith-based extremist organization equipped with advanced weaponry and linked to various criminal acts across five local government areas in Sokoto.

This revelation coincides with the state’s ongoing battle against banditry, prompting Gobir to assure that security agencies are ramping up efforts to combat this escalating threat. “The state government is closely collaborating with federal security agencies to tackle the diverse security challenges facing the people of Sokoto,” he affirmed.

Gobir also noted the proactive measures being implemented to address insecurity, expressing optimism that the delegation’s study tour would yield valuable insights into the changing landscape of criminal activities. These insights are expected to contribute to developing effective strategies aimed at enhancing public safety and promoting peaceful coexistence.

Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, leading the visiting delegation, emphasized the National Defence College’s critical role in training military and police officers for greater responsibilities. Since its establishment in 1992, the institution has prepared nearly 3,000 participants, including representatives from 30 African and Asian nations. Following their tour, the delegation plans to present comprehensive findings and recommendations in both oral and written formats.
