Nigeria Ranks Seventh Globally for International Students in the US

Nigeria has achieved a remarkable milestone, securing the seventh spot globally for sending students to the United States, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange. The report, unveiled during International Education Week, highlights Nigeria as the largest contributor from Africa, with 20,029 students currently enrolled in US colleges and universities.

This marks a 13.5% increase from the previous year, underscoring the growing demand for US education among Nigerian students. US institutions are now home to a record-breaking 1,126,690 international students, the highest ever recorded, with Nigerian students forming a vital part of this diverse academic community.

More than half of Nigerian students in the US are pursuing graduate-level studies, contributing significantly to the academic and cultural environment at American universities. This surge in Nigerian enrolment reflects not only the quality of education offered in the US but also the strong educational ties between the two nations, which continue to thrive through various exchange programs.

As part of International Education Week, the report also highlights Sub-Saharan Africa’s rapid growth in student mobility, marking a 13% increase in 2023/24. This follows an 18% rise in 2022/2023, solidifying the region’s status as the fastest-growing in international education.
