Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, presented a proposed budget of N549.16 billion for the 2025 fiscal year to the state assembly, following a 77% performance rate for the 2024 budget. During his presentation at the state assembly on Friday, Governor Yusuf outlined the budget’s structure, which prioritizes both social welfare and economic growth, aiming to address the state’s most pressing needs.

The proposed 2025 budget allocates N312.63 billion for capital expenditure and N236.53 billion for recurrent expenses, creating a capital-to-recurrent expenditure ratio of 57:43%. According to Governor Yusuf, this allocation structure will enable Kano to continue investing significantly in its social and economic sectors, which have been marked as key development areas.

The capital expenditure will be dedicated to major sectors totaling N461.45 billion, with education taking the largest portion at N168.35 billion, representing 31% of the total budget. Healthcare follows with N90.6 billion (16.5%), while infrastructure is set to receive N70.68 billion (12.87%). Additionally, agriculture is allocated N21.04 billion (3.83%), aiming to boost food security and farming advancements in the state.

Other allocations include N3.88 billion (1.22%) for enhancing manufacturing, commerce, industry, and tourism sectors, and N15.52 billion (2.83%) for environment and sanitation projects. Governance institutions are also prioritized, with an allocation of N98.24 billion (17.57%) to strengthen administrative efficiency and oversight.

Governor Yusuf highlighted the 2024 budget’s 77% success rate, attributing it to effective management and initiatives to close financial loopholes. He noted that 65% of the recurrent revenue and expenditure targets were met, showcasing the administration’s commitment to responsible fiscal planning.

Reflecting on the economic challenges of 2024—including inflation, currency fluctuations, and heightened public unrest, especially among the youth—Governor Yusuf stressed the need for responsive governance. He acknowledged the youth protests earlier in the year as a sign of discontent and committed to introducing youth empowerment programs aimed at fostering economic inclusion and reducing unemployment rates across Kano.
