Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, stated on Thursday that he has the necessary experience to run for governor, though he clarified that he has not actively pursued the position. In his remarks following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s budget presentation for 2025, Obasa responded to rumors and speculations surrounding his political ambitions.

While he acknowledged the discussions about his potential governorship candidacy, Obasa made it clear that his focus had always been on strengthening his political party and mobilizing support for its growth. He stated, “My concern is about building our party, and whatever we do is mainly for this cause.” Obasa further emphasized that his efforts to rally people through the Mandate platform were intended to support the party, not a personal bid for the governorship.

In addressing those who misinterpreted his actions as a personal ambition, Obasa said, “Becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration.” However, he also noted that this does not mean he lacks the qualifications or experience for the role. “I am not too young or lacking in experience to run,” he added, pointing out that he believed he could bring valuable leadership to the state.

Obasa also took the opportunity to dispel claims made by some critics, who suggested that he was seeking political legitimacy by paying for support from influential families. He clarified that while he is indeed related to the Obasa family in Ojo, he does not need to align himself with any other prominent Lagos families to validate his candidacy. He emphasized that if he were to contest the governorship, it would be from his hometown of Agege.

In the same session, Governor Sanwo-Olu presented the state’s 2025 budget, which includes a total revenue of N2.6 trillion and a capital expenditure allocation of N1.7 trillion. Obasa commented on the budget’s timing, acknowledging public concerns over the economy but urging citizens to remain hopeful as the government continues its efforts to steer the nation toward economic recovery.
