Peter Obi has once again voiced concerns over Nigeria’s worsening power crisis, following the latest collapse of the national grid. On Tuesday, Nigerians were plunged into darkness once more, with this being the 10th collapse of the grid since January 2024. The frequent outages have sparked widespread frustration, especially after the grid collapsed three times in just one week last October.

In a statement posted on X, Obi compared Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with electricity supply to South Africa’s recent success. He highlighted that South Africa, with a quarter of Nigeria’s population, celebrated seven months of continuous power supply, while Nigeria can barely manage 10% of the electricity production and distribution capacity of its southern neighbor.

Obi criticized the state of Nigeria’s energy sector, stating, “Is there any tribe in Nigeria that enjoys uninterrupted power supply like South Africa? I am labelled a tribal bigot. When I ask if any religion enjoys special privileges in this crisis, I am called a religious bigot. But I will continue to speak the truth about our situation today.” He emphasized that the power crisis affects all Nigerians equally, regardless of tribe or religion, and underscored the need for collective action to address the problem.

The former governor called for an end to divisive tribal and religious sentiments, urging Nigerians to elect leaders with the vision to tackle the country’s challenges. “The solution lies not in tribal or religious affiliations but in visionary leadership and a shared commitment to progress,” Obi said, stressing the importance of moving the country towards a more productive economy. He further argued that Nigeria must prioritize essential sectors like health, education, and infrastructure to lift its citizens out of poverty and ensure a stable power supply.
