Ibrahim Idoko, the National Vice-Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) for North-Central, has firmly rejected claims by Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, that the movement is larger than the Labour Party. In a recent statement, Idoko criticized Tanko for attempting to downplay the party’s achievements, describing the Obidient Movement as an unnecessary distraction in the context of LP’s longstanding political success.

Tanko made waves during an interview with Arise News, asserting that the Obidient Movement, which rallied around Peter Obi during the 2023 elections, had brought the Labour Party into prominence. He also hinted at the possibility of the movement exploring other political platforms if its principles of good governance were not fully embraced by the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Idoko swiftly rebuffed Tanko’s remarks, calling them a misrepresentation of the political landscape. “This claim is laughable,” he stated in his press release. “Tanko and his allies seem either misinformed or willfully ignorant of the Labour Party’s history and successes before the rise of the Obidient Movement.”

Idoko further pointed to the LP’s achievements long before the movement emerged, citing past electoral successes such as the governorship terms of Olusegun Mimiko in Ondo State and Alex Otti in Abia State. He also reminded Tanko that prominent figures like Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Hon. Samuel Godday had been elected under the Labour Party banner long before the Obidient Movement’s prominence.

“The Labour Party has a rich legacy of success,” Idoko continued. “Tanko and his group may pursue a separate political path if they choose, but we are confident that under Barr. Julius Abure’s leadership, LP will continue to grow stronger and remain the party of choice for the 2027 elections.”

As the Labour Party prepares for the 2027 elections, Idoko emphasized the unity and commitment of North-Central LP chairmen to support Abure and elevate the party to even greater political heights.
