Ahead of the Ondo Governorship Election on Saturday, November 16, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has appointed DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi as the coordinating officer for police security operations. DIG Alabi will work alongside AIG Bennett Igweh and CP Tunji Disu to ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process across the state.

A statement from the Force Headquarters has outlined several crucial security measures to be enforced during the election. These measures aim to safeguard both voters and officials, ensuring the integrity of the election process. One of the key directives includes a strict ban on all vehicular movement, including on roads and waterways, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Election Day, with exceptions made only for essential services such as ambulances, media, and fire services.

In addition to movement restrictions, the Police have prohibited VIPs from bringing security escorts to polling stations or collation centers. This is part of efforts to maintain order and prevent any potential disruptions during the voting process.

Other measures include limiting access to polling areas to authorized personnel and vehicles only. Unauthorized security staff, quasi-security agencies, and vehicles with sirens will be strictly banned from approaching polling stations. Special provisions will be made to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and others with mobility challenges.

To further ensure the smooth conduct of the election, the police have set up dedicated helplines for election-related inquiries and incident reporting. The Nigeria Police Force is also working closely with military and other federal security agencies, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities that may threaten the election’s fairness.
