The newly appointed Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, has committed to promptly restoring peace in the local government areas affected by violence and arson. This assurance comes in light of the disturbances that erupted on Monday, as he emphasized the importance of collaboration with both state and non-state actors, alongside key stakeholders, to tackle the ongoing post-election unrest throughout the region.

Addressing the media during his first briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, Mohammed outlined his plans to combat the unique security challenges facing Rivers State. He expressed a firm stance against corruption within the police force, declaring that any officer engaging in misconduct would be held accountable.

“As I take on this role, my primary focus is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in Rivers State,” Mohammed stated. He acknowledged the state’s position as a vital economic center, noting the complex security landscape characterized by issues such as kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and political-related violence.

Mohammed emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “A society thrives when there is trust between its institutions and its people, and the press plays a crucial role in maintaining that trust.” His commitment to restoring order includes a collaborative approach, seeking input from various community groups, including youth organizations, religious institutions, and civil society.

Highlighting the critical nature of the current security situation, he said, “We will intensify our efforts to address cult-related activities that lead to violence and loss of life.” Mohammed plans to promote education and alternative livelihoods to empower the youth and steer them away from such activities.
