Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has voiced his strong disapproval of the current local government chairmen and councillors in Kwara State, labeling them as illegitimate and lacking the people’s mandate.

Saraki’s remarks come on the heels of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) declaring all candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winners in the recent local government elections. KWSIEC Chairman Baba Okanla announced that the APC secured victories in all 16 local government chairmanship positions and all 193 councillorship seats.

In a post shared on his X handle on Wednesday, Saraki criticized the state government for its failure to address the citizens’ needs, highlighting that the people have clearly expressed their discontent after 64 months of the current administration. He pointed out that during Saturday’s local government elections, despite a significant turnout from Kwara residents, many faced challenges due to a shortage of electoral officials and poor preparations by the electoral body.

Saraki commended the citizens for their resilience in the face of what he termed “deliberately concocted frustrations.” He underscored that, regardless of the results announced by KWSIEC, the populace has conveyed a powerful message of discontent regarding the government’s inability to foster meaningful progress and development in their lives. He concluded by condemning the situation, stating it is a disgrace for the 16 local government areas to be led by individuals who lack both legitimacy and the people’s mandate.
