Senators Unify on Local Government Independence, Clash Over State Police

Senators have reached a significant agreement to incorporate full autonomy for local governments into Nigeria‘s constitution. However, a divide remains regarding the establishment of state police, which is being discussed to tackle growing security concerns.

At a recent retreat organized by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review in partnership with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre in Kano, senators from the Southeast and South-South regions voiced their support for creating additional states. This push aims to enhance representation and address longstanding regional imbalances.

The move to grant autonomy to local governments stems from increasing worries about state governors abusing their power, particularly highlighted by a recent Supreme Court ruling. Senate leaders underscored the importance of ensuring that local governments operate independently, advocating for separate oversight of their elections to eliminate state interference.

While there is robust backing for local government independence, opinions are sharply divided regarding the formation of state police. Supporters argue that state police would be better equipped to address security issues, while critics express concerns over potential misuse by governors against political opponents. Furthermore, senators emphasized the necessity of increasing the number of states in the Southeast to promote fair representation across Nigeria.
