As Nigeria celebrates World Teachers’ Day 2024, the Federal Government has renewed its commitment to enhancing teachers’ welfare, emphasizing the need for their rewards to start here on earth, not just in the afterlife.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Education Minister Professor Tahir Mamman, represented by the Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, praised the dedication and resilience of Nigerian teachers. He highlighted their essential role in human capital development, calling them a cornerstone of nation-building. The minister acknowledged the significant contributions made by teachers at home and abroad, stressing the government’s ongoing efforts to improve teachers’ working conditions and professional standards.

Mamman revealed that the current administration is prioritizing education through various initiatives, such as the establishment of specialized universities and bursary schemes for education students, with over 3,300 students benefiting in 2022 and more expected this year. The government also aims to further support educators through international agreements, making it easier for Nigerian teachers to work abroad.

Meanwhile, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Amba, urged the Federal Government to implement the new salary scale for teachers across all states. Amba acknowledged progress in some areas, including the extension of service years for teachers in 22 states, but emphasized that more needs to be done—especially regarding housing incentives, special allowances for those teaching in rural areas, and ongoing professional development. He encouraged the government to accelerate these reforms to ensure that teachers are rewarded both financially and professionally for their hard work.

As the country joins the global celebration of educators, Mamman encouraged teachers to adopt modern teaching techniques, embrace digital transformation, and continue their dedication to nation-building, assuring them that their voices are heard and valued.
