A devastating accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway claimed the lives of ten individuals, including three children and seven adults, in the Abule Osun area on Tuesday night. The incident, which occurred around 11 PM, has been confirmed by Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement on Wednesday.

Details surrounding the tragedy indicate that a Toyota Sienna, overloaded with passengers, collided with a stationary truck that was partially obstructing the road. Preliminary investigations reveal that the Sienna was traveling at high speed when it crashed into the truck, which was laden with granite and had taken up nearly half of the roadway.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders discovered the grim aftermath. “The Toyota Sienna bus, with the registration number BDG 342 FS, was carrying passengers from the Eastern region of Nigeria when it collided with a parked SHACMAN truck,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained. “The truck had been parked on the road, blocking about half of the carriageway, when the speeding Sienna struck it from behind.”

The unfortunate event resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, including three adult males, four adult females, two young girls, and one young boy. Additionally, three others sustained serious injuries. Emergency officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were able to rescue the injured individuals and transport them to a nearby hospital before the LASEMA team arrived at the scene.

The wrecked Toyota Sienna was subsequently recovered with the assistance of LASEMA’s Lite Tow Truck and taken to the FRSC station. Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been bagged and await collection by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for further processing.
