The Federal Government has taken swift action, suspending 13 students from the Federal Government College (FGC) in Enugu for six weeks following a disturbing bullying incident. The suspension follows the release of a viral video that showed students bullying a fellow pupil, which raised significant concerns about student safety within the institution.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, made the announcement through a statement issued on Wednesday by Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education. Alausa emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment in all federal schools across Nigeria.

The bullying incident, which occurred on November 7, involved the gang assault of a Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) student who was a day student. A video of the assault quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking public outrage.

In response, the Ministry of Education launched an investigation into the incident. A disciplinary committee was set up to probe the matter, and based on preliminary findings, all 13 students involved have been placed on suspension for six weeks.

The Minister further instructed the School-Based Management Committee to collaborate with local law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, including the possibility of the students being influenced by external groups. As part of the response, additional security measures have been implemented, including the involvement of law enforcement agencies to secure the school premises.

Moreover, Dr. Alausa assured that counseling and rehabilitation services would be provided to both the students involved in the incident and the victim, helping them reintegrate into a positive and safe school environment.
