Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State is reportedly on the verge of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as preparations heat up for the 2027 general elections.

According to 1MinuteNaija, unless there’s a last-minute change, the official announcement is expected to take place on November 19 in Jalingo. Reliable insiders within the APC’s National Working Committee revealed that all arrangements have been finalized to formally welcome the governor into the party.

APC’s national chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, is said to be leading the delegation that will receive Governor Kefas. A source at the party’s headquarters confirmed that his defection was one of the key topics discussed during a leadership meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja. “Everything is already set for the Taraba governor’s arrival into the APC fold,” the insider disclosed.

Governor Kefas himself fueled the rumours earlier this week when he hinted at the possibility of switching parties while addressing APC and PDP stakeholders at the Banquet Hall of TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.

“Yes, a rumour is indeed circulating, and I’m also hearing that rumour,” he said. “Sometimes, when a rumour keeps moving like that, it makes somebody think it’s something good. I’m also hearing that rumour, and I’m working on it to see that it becomes a reality. So, by the grace of God, in a few days after next week, you will hear from me. Let’s continue to pray. I want to assure everyone here, whether you are from APC, PDP, or any other party, that we are committed to doing justice. Let’s forgive one another and focus on moving this state forward.”

His remarks have since intensified political speculation across Taraba State, with many of his loyalists reportedly aligning themselves with the APC ahead of his formal defection.

Meanwhile, an APC insider also revealed that discussions are ongoing with Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who may soon follow the same path. “The defection of Governor Fintiri is already a settled matter. After Taraba, Adamawa is next,” the source claimed.

Political analysts believe the moves are part of the APC’s broader strategy to tighten its grip on the North-East a region currently divided between the ruling party and the PDP. At present, the APC governs Borno, Gombe, and Yobe States, while the PDP controls Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa.

The region also holds symbolic significance, being home to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who ran as the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2023. That election saw the PDP winning five North-East states, while the APC dominated in Borno, the home state of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

As November 19 approaches, all eyes are now fixed on Jalingo, where Governor Kefas’ next move could reshape Taraba’s political landscape and potentially alter the balance of power in the North-East.
