The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of minors arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. Reports indicate that 76 suspects, primarily minors appearing malnourished, were arraigned last Friday, with several collapsing in court and requiring medical assistance.

The fainting of these minors drew significant attention, prompting the IG to assert that their actions were staged to draw negative publicity towards the police. Egbetokun emphasized that medical help was provided promptly and reiterated the police’s dedication to the welfare of individuals in their custody.

In response to the growing public outrage over the treatment of these youths, President Bola Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of charges against the minors on Monday. This decision underscores the government’s sensitivity to the situation and the need to protect vulnerable groups within the justice system.

Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the IG had tasked investigators with assessing the minors’ conditions while in police custody. He stated that upon reviewing the investigation report, Egbetokun pledged to address any identified procedural lapses.

Adejobi further highlighted the importance of proper investigation methods for minors, announcing a conference scheduled for November 7, 2024, focusing on child-friendly investigative techniques. This workshop aims to ensure that police investigations adhere to professional standards and prioritize the well-being of vulnerable individuals.
