Lagos State has dismissed widespread rumors of a ban on sachet water, following confusion sparked by a viral video showing enforcement officers destroying packs of the product. Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified the situation in a statement on his official X account, explaining that the reports were untrue.

Wahab pointed out that the individuals seen in the video were not from any Lagos State agency but were officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). He emphasized that their actions were part of a legitimate effort to remove unregistered and unsafe products from the market to protect public health.

“The Lagos State government has not imposed any ban on sachet water, and there are no plans to do so,” Wahab confirmed. He further explained that the focus of the state government is on improving plastic waste management. As part of this initiative, Lagos is enforcing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program, which holds producers of PET, sachets, and carrier bags accountable for waste management.

The Minister reiterated that NAFDAC’s actions were part of routine health and safety regulations, aimed at ensuring that only safe and compliant products are sold in the market. The sachet water industry, according to Wahab, remains unaffected by any ban.
