The Nigerian government has officially launched an investigation into Air Peace, Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), and MTN Nigeria over suspected consumer rights violations. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) announced the probe on Sunday, with spokesperson Ondaje Ijagwu confirming the inquiries.

The investigation will focus on Air Peace, which faces allegations of exploitative pricing on ticket bookings, particularly with significant increases on some domestic routes. GTB is under scrutiny due to ongoing network failures, preventing customers from accessing their funds or using banking applications effectively. MTN Nigeria is being investigated following complaints of undelivered data services, unexpected data depletion, and inadequate customer support.

The inquiry is set to begin on December 3, 4, and 5, 2024. The FCCPC highlighted that the investigation is aligned with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 and aims to address issues like poor service delivery and exploitative business practices. The involved companies will be required to appear before the Commission to respond to the allegations on the scheduled dates.

This move emphasizes the FCCPC’s commitment to safeguarding consumer interests, promoting fairness in the marketplace, and holding businesses accountable. The Commission has also encouraged consumers to report any cases of poor service or exploitative practices.
