Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has declared Friday, November 15, 2024, as a work-free day to enable civil servants to travel to their local government areas and participate in the Saturday local government elections. The announcement, contained in a circular signed by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, underscores the administration’s dedication to fostering democratic engagement across the state.

The circular, dated November 14, 2024, highlighted that the holiday would ensure full participation in the elections scheduled across Ogun State’s 20 local government areas and 236 wards. “This move demonstrates Governor Abiodun’s commitment to promoting democratic participation and civic engagement,” the statement emphasized.

In a separate directive, the state government also announced a restriction on the movement of people and vehicles during the election hours on Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., urging residents to plan accordingly.

The statement further noted: “The work-free day aims to ensure active participation in the electoral process, allowing citizens to exercise their civic duties without hindrance. Permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies are to ensure compliance with this directive.”

The local government elections, organized by the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, will see the election of chairpersons for the 20 LGAs and councillors for the 236 wards. These measures reflect Governor Abiodun’s efforts to enhance civic engagement and democratic growth in the state.
