The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested over 17,000 motorists for various traffic offences in Edo State between January and October 2024. According to the FRSC Sector Commander for the state, Cyril Mathew, the arrests were carried out across multiple locations in the state over the first ten months of the year.

Mathew provided a detailed breakdown of the arrests, highlighting a consistent trend of traffic violations each month. From January, where 2,141 arrests were made, to October, which saw 1,598 violations, the total number of offenders reached 17,232.

Among the most common offences, Mathew listed the failure to carry fire extinguishers, driving without speed-limiting devices, tyre violations, and not using seat belts. Other violations included overloading, route violations, driving against traffic, and using a mobile phone while driving.

Offenders were brought before a mobile court and fined based on the severity of their violations. Mathew emphasized that these strict measures are intended to serve as a deterrent to other drivers, urging them to adhere to traffic laws to help reduce accidents and ensure safer roads for all.
