President Bola Tinubu is set to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, on Monday, December 2, 2024, to co-chair the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa. This high-level meeting marks a significant step in strengthening the long-standing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

The Bi-National Commission, scheduled for December 3, will be preceded by a ministerial meeting on December 2 at the South African Parliament Building in Cape Town. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced on Sunday that Tinubu and Ramaphosa will engage in in-depth discussions covering bilateral, regional, and global matters of shared interest.

“Building on their June 2024 meeting in Johannesburg, the leaders will review progress since the 10th session of the BNC, held in Abuja in late 2021,” Onanuga noted.

Focus Areas of the 11th BNC Session
This year’s BNC meeting, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Commission, will feature deliberations across eight strategic working groups. These include:

Political Consultations: Enhancing diplomatic cooperation.
Trade and Investments: Strengthening economic ties and partnerships.
Defence and Security: Addressing regional stability and collaboration.
Banking and Finance: Exploring financial sector opportunities.
Mines and Energy: Leveraging shared resources for mutual benefit.
Manufacturing and Social Sector: Expanding industrial and social cooperation.

Officials from both countries are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements aimed at deepening cooperation in these critical areas.

A Platform for Sustainable Collaboration
The Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission, established in 1999, serves as a cornerstone for fostering high-level dialogue and advancing shared goals in diplomacy, trade, security, and economic development. The first session at the Heads of State level took place in Pretoria in 2019.

This year’s meeting underscores the enduring partnership between Africa’s two largest economies. President Tinubu will be accompanied by a delegation comprising state governors, ministers, and senior government officials. He is expected to return to Nigeria shortly after the conclusion of the BNC meeting.
