President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former Supreme Court Judge, extending his heartfelt condolences to the late jurist’s family, the legal community, and Nigeria’s judiciary at large.

Justice Ogwuegbu, born in 1933 in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma, Imo State, dedicated over five decades to the Nigerian judiciary, leaving a profound impact through his service, mentorship, and landmark rulings. Tinubu, in a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Justice Ogwuegbu as a towering figure who helped shape Nigeria’s legal landscape with a strong commitment to justice, integrity, and discipline.

The President highlighted that Justice Ogwuegbu’s contributions to Nigerian jurisprudence continue to influence legal practices today. His career, culminating in his appointment to the Supreme Court, saw him preside over crucial cases involving federalism, banking regulations, university autonomy, and individual rights under the Nigerian Constitution. His judgments remain foundational, guiding legal interpretations and decisions.

Beyond his service on the Supreme Court, Justice Ogwuegbu was instrumental in Nigeria’s post-democracy reforms. He served as President of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and led the Judicial Commission of Inquiry in 1999, which investigated human rights abuses during the military regimes.

In his tribute, President Tinubu emphasized that Justice Ogwuegbu’s life of excellence and discipline set an inspirational standard for the judiciary.
