In a bold move to address unemployment challenges among graduates, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has introduced an Innovative Skills and Pioneering Entrepreneurship Award (U-INSPIRE). This initiative aims to equip undergraduates with essential vocational skills alongside their academic education, ensuring they are better prepared for today’s competitive workforce.

The U-INSPIRE program, launched on campus in collaboration with industry experts, will provide students with hands-on training in various vocational fields. Notable professionals, including artists, will offer guidance to registered students, allowing them to acquire practical skills during their leisure time.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. AbdulWahab Egbewole (SAN) emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry demands. He remarked, “Many of our graduates lack the skills required by modern industries. This program is designed to fill that gap by enriching students’ academic experience with the practical expertise needed in today’s fast-evolving job market.”

Although optional, students who participate will receive certificates upon completion. Prof. Egbewole also noted that the initiative is open to students from other institutions, with all certification processes conducted online. He underscored the program’s alignment with UNILORIN’s Vision 1:10:500, which aims to position the university as a world-class institution focused on producing graduates who can thrive in both local and global industries.

Dr. Abdulkarim Oloyede, the acting Director of the Centre for Research Development and In-house Training, highlighted the program’s significance, calling it “an all-encompassing platform for students to acquire practical skills, ensuring they are well-rounded for the future.”
