The Federal Capital Territory squadron leader at the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), Dr. Yusuf Suberu, has urged motorists to exercise caution during the dry Harmattan season due to foggy and hazy conditions that increase the risk of accidents. Speaking during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Dr. Suberu emphasized the importance of road safety awareness as visibility drops during this period.

Dr. Suberu highlighted that the dry season, especially during the “ember months,” is characterized by increased road activity and more impatient driving behavior. He cautioned drivers against excessive speeding, stressing that the desire to maximize financial gain through multiple trips should not come at the expense of safety.

“Speeding remains one of the most dangerous behaviors, contributing significantly to road fatalities. Drivers must prioritize discipline and vigilance to prevent unnecessary accidents,” he said.

The VIO leader advised motorists to maintain their vehicles regularly, including servicing brakes, tires, and headlights, to ensure they are in optimal working condition. He also called for attention to road diversions and obstructions caused by ongoing construction projects across the country.

Dr. Suberu warned against overloading vehicles, explaining that it affects performance and compromises drivers’ ability to respond effectively in emergencies. “Overloading and speeding, especially during the dry season, significantly increase the chances of serious accidents,” he added.

With reports highlighting alarming road accident statistics, including over 21,500 deaths in four years, Suberu reiterated the need for strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations. He urged road users to stay patient, respect speed limits, and avoid taking unnecessary risks that could endanger lives.

“The ember months are particularly demanding, but we must all work together to create safer roads. By driving responsibly, maintaining vehicles, and being tolerant towards one another, a crash-free society is achievable,” he concluded.
