Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi, has announced an indefinite strike over unpaid earned academic allowances and poor working conditions. The union also raised concerns about the absence of pension and retirement schemes, describing the situation as “unbearable.”

Speaking during a press conference held at the university’s Yuli campus on Friday, November 29, 2024, ASUU SAZU Chairperson Auwal Nuhu detailed the reasons behind the strike. According to him, the congress reviewed their unresolved grievances in the presence of the National Executive Council (NEC) visitation team and determined that the university administration and the Bauchi State Government have shown no commitment to addressing their demands.

“The congress noted the lack of readiness and commitment of the university administration and the government to attend to its demands,” Auwal stated. “We have exhausted all mechanisms, including dialogue and appeals, to resolve these issues, but all attempts have been fruitless.”

The ASUU chairperson emphasized that the strike, effective immediately, will continue until concrete steps are taken to resolve their concerns. He highlighted how demoralized the union’s members feel due to decades of service without financial security or a functional retirement system.

This indefinite strike comes after repeated warnings and several notifications, including concerns about the impending retirement of about 30 PhD holders within the institution. Auwal reiterated that the union remains firm in its resolution to withhold services until tangible measures are implemented to improve the welfare of academic staff and the university’s working environment.
