Teen Arrested for Cable Theft at Ibadan Stadium; Mother Faints at the Scene

A 14-year-old student, Sulaiman Abubakar, was arrested by security personnel at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan for allegedly stealing wires and cables valued at N300,000. The incident occurred on Thursday night, October 11, 2024, during a training session for the Shooting Star Football Club.
Abubakar, a JSS 2 student of Eleyele High School, reportedly sneaked into the stadium’s main bowl and spent the night there after the security team had locked the entrances. According to sources, during questioning, the teenager confessed to breaking pipes and cutting camera cables connected to the canopy lights, intending to sell the stolen materials.
A security source revealed, “He admitted to spending the night in one of the rooms after the training session and confessed to the theft during interrogation.”

The situation took an emotional turn when Abubakar’s mother, who resides in Sabo Area, Mokola, fainted upon seeing her son in handcuffs. It took the help of stadium workers to revive her. She later mentioned that her son had disobeyed her the night before and had been punished for it.
Tunde Ajibike, General Manager of the Oyo State Sports Council, confirmed the arrest and stated that the boy has been handed over to the police for further investigation. The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, visited the scene for an assessment and emphasized the need for heightened security at the stadium. Adegoke assured the public that the government will take steps to prevent future incidents of theft within the complex.
