President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Nigerian Tribune on its remarkable 75th anniversary, applauding the newspaper for its long-standing commitment to social justice, democracy, and press freedom. In a statement released on Friday, titled ‘President Tinubu commends Nigerian Tribune on 75 Years of Progressive Journalism,’ the President praised the publication for consistently upholding the vision of its founding members.

Founded on November 16, 1949, by Nigeria’s first Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his wife, Hannah, the Nigerian Tribune has become a hallmark of investigative journalism in the country. President Tinubu recognized the paper’s steadfast promotion of constructive nationalism and its advocacy for the rights of all Nigerians, irrespective of social, economic, or political backgrounds.

Tinubu also acknowledged the immense contributions of key figures in the paper’s history, including former Lagos State Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Ayo Ojewunmi, Chief Tola Adeniyi, Biodun Oduwole, and Folu Olamiti. These pioneers played a crucial role in maintaining the Tribune’s influence, even in the face of pressures to silence its voice.

“The Nigerian Tribune has remained a bastion of truth, a vigilant watchdog of society, and a staunch advocate for democracy,” President Tinubu remarked. He stressed the importance of credible journalism, particularly in today’s digital age, where anyone can take to online platforms as “citizen journalists.”
