MTN Data Revenue Surpasses Voice Earnings, Reaches N804bn in 2024

MTN Nigeria has announced a remarkable achievement, with data revenue hitting N804 billion in the first nine months of 2024, surpassing its voice revenue for the first time. This milestone marks a significant shift in the company’s revenue structure, underscoring the growing demand for data services across the nation.
In its unaudited financial results for the period ending September 30, 2024, MTN reported a 15% year-on-year growth in data revenue, up from N701 billion during the same period in 2023. The surge in data usage can be attributed to factors such as expanded 4G network coverage, increased smartphone adoption, and a rising demand for digital services.

During the third quarter alone, MTN’s data revenue soared to N269.06 billion, reflecting the ongoing transition towards data-centric services in Nigeria. As a result, the company’s overall revenue for the nine months reached N2.37 trillion, marking a 34% increase from the previous year.
Voice revenue, while still significant, stood at N701 billion, highlighting the company’s shift toward digital and data services as the primary revenue stream. MTN’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, expressed pride in the company’s performance, stating, “In the first nine months of 2024, we sustained the growth in our underlying operating performance—underpinned by our resilient business model and operational agility—despite challenging conditions.”
