Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved a monthly N200,000 allowance for principals of all secondary schools in the state, aimed at helping them address immediate maintenance needs. The announcement was made on Monday during the Sokoto State 2025 Citizens Budget Discussion at the Sultan Abubakar Maccido Institute of Quranic and General Studies.

During the discussion, Chiso Abdullahi, the former deputy governor of Sokoto, appealed to the governor to approve funds for school principals to manage minor repairs and maintenance tasks without having to wait for lengthy government approval processes. Abdullahi highlighted that the funds would allow schools to quickly hire carpenters, masons, and other workers when repairs are needed, ensuring smoother school operations.

In response to this request, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abubakar Bawa, confirmed the approval of N200,000 for each principal per month, covering all 23 local government areas in Sokoto. The payments are set to begin in January 2025.

Additionally, Governor Aliyu has directed the state’s commissioner for local government affairs, Dadi Adare, to review and adjust the allowances of traditional rulers in the state in accordance with the current economic climate. This move follows a request from Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, the district head of Kilgori, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and called for improved allowances for traditional leaders.
